Application and Relevance
This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving asthma episodes may occur. It is relevant for teachers, childcare workers, aged-care workers, disability workers, sports coaches, youth workers and designated workplace first aiders.
Duration
4 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment OR
3 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment with approx. 1 hour pre-work (online)
Course Content
This course provides the skills and knowledge to be able to develop an asthma risk assessment and emergency
management plan and provide asthma-related first aid interventions in the workplace. It contains one unit.
VU22927 Manage asthma risks and emergencies in the workplace
This unit covers:
+ Triggers, signs and symptoms of mild to moderate allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
+ Background knowledge of the triggers, signs and symptoms of asthma
+ Risk minimisation and management strategies for asthma emergencies
+ Guidelines of asthma peak bodies
+ Emergency treatment for an asthma episode
+ Communicating details to emergency services
+ Workplace incident recording and reporting
+ Evaluating responses to asthma emergencies
Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisite units for this course. It is recommended participants have language and literacy skills equivalent to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).
Assessment Methods
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge.
