22578VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis
Application and Relevance
This course applies to a range of settings where emergencies involving allergic reaction may occur. It is relevant for people working in childcare, education, aged and community care, tourism, hospitality and other workplace and community settings.
Duration
- 4 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment OR
- 3 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment with approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes of pre-work (online)
Course Content
The course contains two units.
VU23090 Provide first aid management of anaphylaxis
This unit covers:
+ Triggers, signs and symptoms of mild to moderate allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
+ Emergency response to anaphylaxis, including ASCIA action plans and adrenaline dosage
+ Use of adrenaline autoinjector devices
+ Communicating details to emergency services and incident reporting procedures
+ Evaluating the response to an anaphylaxis incident
VU23091 Develop risk minimisation and risk management strategies for anaphylaxis
This unit covers:
+ Development of individual anaphylaxis management plans
+ Risk minimisation strategies for allergies
+ Communication plans to raise awareness
+ Record keeping and documentation
Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisite units for this course. As a minimum, participants must have language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Prior to the start of face-to-face practical training, there may be a short knowledge quiz to check language, literacy and numeracy skills, as required.
Assessment Methods
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge.
